Safe Pregnancy Termination at Palmotićeva Clinic

Pregnancy termination (abortion) is a medical procedure used to end an unwanted pregnancy. Palmotićeva Clinic provides safe, confidential and professionally guided pregnancy termination in a private and comfortable setting, with full discretion and medical support before, during and after the procedure.

Until When Can Pregnancy Termination Be Performed?

According to the laws of the Republic of Serbia:

  • Elective pregnancy termination is possible up to the end of gestational week 10 at the request of a pregnant woman aged 16 or older
  • Termination after week 10 is possible only for medical reasons and with a committee decision
  • If the pregnant woman is under 16, written parental or legal guardian consent is required

Pregnancy termination is your personal decision and falls under medical confidentiality — no one else needs to be informed unless you choose so.

Methods of Pregnancy Termination

Depending on gestational age and individual circumstances, we employ two methods:

  • Vacuum aspiration (suction) — the most common method up to week 10. Performed under brief general anaesthesia, takes approximately 10 minutes, is painless and the patient goes home the same day
  • Medical abortion — administration of a combination of medicines (mifepristone + misoprostol) up to gestational week 9, without surgical intervention

The Procedure — Step by Step

  1. Initial consultation — gynaecological examination and ultrasound to confirm pregnancy, determine gestational age and rule out contraindications
  2. Preparation — no food or drink for 8 hours before the procedure, arrive with a companion (due to anaesthesia), bring ID and medical documentation
  3. Procedure — performed under sterile conditions, under brief anaesthesia, under constant anaesthesiologist supervision
  4. Recovery — after waking from anaesthesia you remain for a short observation period, then go home
  5. Follow-up — mandatory check-up 2 weeks after the procedure to check recovery

What to Expect After the Procedure

  • Mild bleeding and cramping are normal for 1–2 weeks
  • Avoid physical exertion, sexual intercourse and bathing in a tub for 2 weeks
  • Your period returns within 4–6 weeks
  • The follow-up appointment is mandatory to verify complete recovery
  • In case of heavy bleeding, fever or pain — contact your doctor immediately

Contraception After Pregnancy Termination

Ovulation can occur as early as 10–14 days after the procedure, meaning a new pregnancy is possible even before your first period. Discuss reliable contraception with your gynaecologist immediately after the procedure:

  • Hormonal contraception (pill, implant, hormonal IUD)
  • IUD — can be placed immediately after the procedure
  • Barrier contraception (condoms)

Confidentiality and Privacy

All information about your visit and medical treatment is strictly confidential and protected by medical secrecy. Our clinic provides a discreet service in a private setting, with no waiting and maximum respect for your privacy.

Patients often ask

No — vacuum aspiration is performed under brief general anaesthesia and is completely painless. Medical abortion may cause menstrual-like cramps controlled with analgesics. In both cases, discomfort is minimal.

Most patients return to daily activities the very next day. Mild bleeding and cramps may last 1–2 weeks. A mandatory follow-up is scheduled 2 weeks later. Your period returns within 4–6 weeks.

A safe termination performed by an experienced gynaecologist does not affect future fertility. Complications are extremely rare. Most women can conceive again in the very next cycle.

Partner consent is not required — pregnancy termination is your personal decision protected by medical confidentiality. Parental consent is required only if the patient is under 16 years old.

Ovulation can occur as early as 10–14 days after the procedure. We recommend discussing contraception immediately after the intervention. Options include hormonal contraception, IUD or barrier methods — your gynaecologist will suggest the best solution for you.
