What is a gynecological examination and why is it important?

A gynecological examination is a fundamental preventive procedure dedicated to the health of the female reproductive organs — the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix and vagina. Regular gynecological check-ups enable early detection of disease, reproductive health monitoring and prevention of serious conditions such as cervical cancer, endometriosis and polycystic ovaries.

What does a complete gynecological examination include?

At Palmotićeva Clinic, every gynecological examination involves a comprehensive approach including:

  • Detailed medical history — discussion of your menstrual cycle, symptoms, contraception and family history
  • Speculum examination — visual inspection of the cervix and vaginal walls
  • Colposcopy — magnified examination of the cervix with a colposcope for early detection of changes
  • PAP test — cervical cytology smear for premalignant screening (when indicated)
  • Transvaginal ultrasound — precise imaging of the uterus, ovaries and surrounding pelvic structures
  • Specialist consultation — explanation of findings, diagnostic conclusion and a follow-up or treatment plan

Who should have a gynecological examination?

The examination is relevant for women of all age groups — from a young woman's first gynecological visit to menopausal women for whom regular check-ups are particularly important. We especially recommend a gynecological examination if you have:

  • Irregular or painful periods
  • Unusual vaginal discharge or bleeding between cycles
  • Lower abdominal or pelvic pain
  • Contraception or pregnancy planning needs
  • Menopausal symptoms (hot flushes, dryness, osteoporosis)

How often should you have a gynecological check-up?

An annual gynecological examination is recommended even when you have no symptoms. Women over 30 or with risk factors should attend more frequently. A preventive approach is the most effective strategy for preserving women's health.

Patients often ask

An annual gynecological examination is recommended even when you have no complaints. Women over 30 or with risk factors should attend more frequently. Regular check-ups allow early detection of changes in the cervix, ovaries and uterus.

A complete examination includes taking a medical history, speculum examination, colposcopy, PAP test (when indicated), transvaginal pelvic ultrasound and specialist consultation. Infection swabs and additional lab tests are taken as needed.

A gynecological examination is painless or minimally uncomfortable. We use modern thin instruments and a gentle approach. If you feel anxious, please let us know — we will adjust the pace to your comfort.

A basic examination can be performed during menstruation, but for PAP tests and swabs we recommend attending outside your menstrual bleeding (ideally 5–7 days after your period) for result accuracy.

The first gynecological visit is recommended by age 21, or earlier if there are complaints, irregular periods, pain or sexual activity has begun. Early monitoring is key to prevention and reproductive health.
