Early detection of pregnancy

Pregnancy

Early pregnancy detection enables timely prenatal care. At Palmotićeva Clinic we offer three reliable methods — urine test, blood analysis (beta HCG) and ultrasound confirmation — providing answers as early as two weeks after conception.

Early Symptoms Indicating Pregnancy

The moment you discover you are pregnant is filled with intense emotions — from excitement to anticipation and uncertainty. Regardless of the feelings, your life will undergo profound changes from that moment. This is precisely why early pregnancy detection is essential for timely initiation of prenatal care.

The most common early signs of pregnancy include:

  • Missed period — the most reliable first signal
  • Frequent nausea, especially in the morning ("morning sickness")
  • Breast swelling and tenderness
  • Increased fatigue and drowsiness
  • Frequent urination
  • Mood and appetite changes

Methods for Early Pregnancy Detection

At Palmotićeva Gynaecology Clinic, we use three methods for precise and early pregnancy detection:

  • Urine analysis (home test): Pregnancy can be detected in urine from the first day of a missed period, approximately 14 days after conception. The test detects HCG hormone that the placenta begins to secrete after implantation.
  • Blood analysis — beta HCG: The most reliable method with accuracy exceeding 99%. Biochemical blood analysis measures the exact concentration of HCG hormone, enabling pregnancy confirmation as early as 10–12 days after intercourse and estimation of gestational age.
  • Ultrasound method: The gestational sac can be visualised by transvaginal ultrasound from the 5th week of pregnancy (3 weeks from conception). The foetal heartbeat is detected from weeks 6–7. Ultrasound confirms pregnancy location and rules out ectopic pregnancy.

When to Visit a Gynaecologist?

We recommend booking your first gynaecological appointment as soon as you receive a positive pregnancy test. At the first visit, the gynaecologist will:

  • Confirm pregnancy and its location by ultrasound
  • Check the foetal heartbeat
  • Determine gestational age and due date
  • Create a prenatal monitoring plan with all necessary tests
  • Answer all your questions about the course of pregnancy

What Happens After Pregnancy Confirmation?

After confirming pregnancy, the gynaecologist creates an individualised monitoring plan that includes regular ultrasound check-ups, laboratory blood and urine tests, screening tests, and advice on nutrition, supplementation and physical activity. The goal is a healthy pregnancy and safe delivery — and it all begins with early detection.

A home urine test gives reliable results from the first day of a missed period, approximately 14 days after conception. For earlier confirmation, a blood test (beta HCG) can detect pregnancy as early as 10–12 days after ovulation.

The beta HCG blood test is the most reliable method for early pregnancy detection with accuracy over 99%. It measures the exact hormone concentration, which also allows assessment of gestational age and monitoring of pregnancy progression.

The gestational sac can be seen on transvaginal ultrasound from the 5th week of pregnancy (counting from the last period), while the foetal heartbeat is usually detected from weeks 6 to 7.

The most common early signs include: missed period, nausea (especially in the morning), breast tenderness, fatigue, frequent urination and mood changes. These symptoms typically appear 4–6 weeks from the last period.

A positive test is a signal to book your first gynaecological appointment. The doctor will use ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy location (ruling out ectopic pregnancy), check the heartbeat and provide a prenatal care plan with all necessary tests.

Yes, the most common reason is testing too early before HCG hormone levels are high enough. If your period is late but the test is negative, repeat the test after 2–3 days or have a blood test for definitive confirmation.
